Semester Abroad FAQ: Honest Answers from EdOdyssey’s CEO

Spending a full semester abroad? Exciting! But also a big decision. There’s a lot to think about: Which program is best for you? How do you choose a location? Do you need to speak a second language? What happens if you feel homesick? And what will you really walk away with at the end?

We brought these questions—and a few more so you can get to know EdOdyssey a little better—straight to the source: EdOdyssey’s founder and CEO Peter McGovern.

He offered the honest and thoughtful answers you’ll find below in this part-FAQ, part-Q&A. He draws on insights from many years of experience: studying abroad himself, leading student groups across the world, and building EdOdyssey from the ground up over the past decade.

So, if you're even considering a semester abroad, read on. You might find the clarity and the confidence you’ve been looking for to finally make a decision.

Q: Why did EdOdyssey begin to offer semester programs?
A. When we first started EdOdyssey, we were focused on short-term and faculty-led programs, but we kept hearing the same thing from our students: “I wish I could stay longer.”

“Reflecting on my personal experience spending two semesters abroad in college, I couldn't agree more,” Peter said. “Semester programs felt like a natural evolution—a way to deepen the experience, relationships, and personal growth that our short-term programs sparked.”

And so, over time, we opened up three semester locations: Lima, Florence, and most recently, Fukuoka. They are student-centered and are built on our strong local partnerships that let us create truly immersive experiences for you.

Q: There are a lot of semester study abroad options out there. What makes EdOdyssey stand out?
A. “We lead with heart, depth, and community,” Peter said. “We keep our student groups small and intentionally build experiences that challenge you to think deeply, engage respectfully, and grow meaningfully.”

Every EdOdyssey program is built in close partnership with locals—educators, artists, host university abroad, community leaders—so when you study abroad with us, you’re not just a visitor; you’re part of something. This isn’t cookie-cutter study abroad—it’s human, personal, and powerful. Our boutique approach is deliberate. We don’t offer programs in dozens of destinations because we believe in doing a few places really well. This has enabled us to create some of the most accessible and robust study abroad programs available in the destinations where we work.

Q: Share a story that stuck with you because it exemplifies what EdOdyssey is all about.
A. “There’s a student who comes to mind immediately,” Peter said. “She studied abroad with us in Peru several years ago. She was quiet at first, a bit unsure if she belonged in Lima. But over time, she formed an incredible bond with her host mom and started volunteering at a local school. By the end of the semester, she was speaking confidently, leading reflections for the group, and applying for internships in international education. Watching her transform—not just in confidence but in purpose—was a reminder of why we do this work.”

Q: How can a student approach a tough decision on location: Florence, Fukuoka, or Lima?
A. Start with introspection, Peter suggested. Ask yourself: Why do I want to study abroad? What kind of challenge am I looking for? What lights me up—language, food, art, nature, community, or independence?

Our semester destinations are all so different. Florence is steeped in art and history; Fukuoka blends innovation and tradition with peaceful charm; Lima is vibrant, complex, and full of unexpected connections.

“The right fit often comes from imagining not the most glamorous experience—or the most familiar location—but the one that will help you grow the most,” Peter said.

Q: What are three of the most common questions students ask, and what are the answers?
Will my credits transfer—and can I still graduate on time?
Yes! We work with your school to ensure coursework aligns with your degree path. We’re happy to loop in your academic advisor early and make a plan together.

Do I have to know the local language?
No—but you’ll learn. Whether you’re a beginner or fluent, we support you in building confidence through classes and immersion. Language is just one of many tools for connection.

What if I get homesick or something goes wrong?
That’s a real concern—and a good one. Challenges like homesickness or culture shock aren’t just possible, they’re part of the growth. Studies show that resilience is one of the top soft skills developed during study abroad. We promise to support and empower you through it. Our team is there 24/7—on-site and back home—ready to help you feel grounded and thrive.

Q: What can I expect from classes abroad?
A. Our academics are grounded in place and purpose. You’ll take core classes taught by local professors at our partner universities. Many themes connect to the host country, but there’s also a wide variety to ensure you can progress toward your major and graduation goals. Beyond the classroom, there are opportunities for independent research, internships, or service projects—some for credit, some not.

“It’s rigorous, but always experiential,” Peter said. “Imagine bringing your studies alive in the place you’re learning about. We’ve carefully selected local partner institutions so you have access to top facilities, inspiring faculty, and a diverse course catalog.”

Q: How will I be supported before, during, and after my program?
A. From the moment you apply to the day you return home—and long after—you’re part of the EdOdyssey community. Before you travel, we offer one-on-one guidance, packing tips, academic advising, pre-departure calls, and cultural prep. While abroad, you’ll have caring local staff, a dedicated program director, and regular check-ins. Afterward, we stay in touch—whether you need a reference, a reunion, or just want to talk about what’s next. Many alumni come back as campus ambassadors or mentors for future students.

Q: How does EdOdyssey make sure students engage with the local culture and community in an authentic, meaningful, and respectful way?
A. “We take cultural humility seriously,” Peter said. “That means listening first, being curious, and building programs with—not just in—our host communities. You’re not just sightseeing; you’re learning from local leaders, reflecting on your presence, and encouraged to be a thoughtful participant.”

We talk openly about privilege, culture shock, and how to be a respectful guest. In every location, we have local expert staff who not only support you but are excited to share their culture and home with you.

Q: What do you hope every student walks away with after a semester with EdOdyssey?
A. “A deeper sense of self. A broader view of the world. And a few friendships that cross continents,” Peter said. “More than anything, I want students to come home with new questions—about who they are, what they believe in, and how they want to show up in the world. You won’t return home the same—and that’s exactly the point.”

Q: How can a semester abroad impact a student's career or future opportunities?
A. Study abroad helps you stand out—not just on a résumé, but in how you think, lead, and relate to others. It builds critical soft skills like adaptability, cross-cultural communication, and confidence. These aren’t just buzzwords; they’re game changers in today’s job market. And beyond the career piece, it also gives you clarity and courage about what you want to pursue next.

READY TO TAKE THE LEAP?

"Study abroad isn’t a pause—it’s a launchpad. It’s not a break from your education; it’s one of the most powerful parts of it,” Peter said. “And if you’re on the fence? That probably means you’re ready.”
