Designed for middle school students, this immersive Washington, DC program goes beyond sightseeing to explore leadership, history, service, and community.

Students experience the essential sites of the nation’s capital while stepping into the role of lawmakers, serving alongside a local nonprofit, tackling team challenges, and reflecting on the kind of leaders and community members they want to become. It’s the classic Washington, DC student experience, reimagined through hands-on learning, meaningful service, and experiences that connect the city’s history to students’ own lives.

This itinerary combines Washington’s must-see sites with hands-on experiences focused on leadership, service, teamwork, and personal growth.

Day 1 | Welcome to Washington DC: Building Our Community

Arrive in Washington, DC, meet your EdOdyssey Program Leaders, and get settled into your hotel.

Kick off the experience with interactive team challenges and a welcome dinner that gives students a chance to connect, build community, and get ready for the days ahead.

Day 2 | Democracy, Leadership & American History: Finding Your Voice

Explore the U.S. Capitol and step into the role of lawmakers through an interactive simulation where students debate, negotiate, compromise, and vote.

Continue to the Smithsonian National Museum of American History before seeing the White House and experiencing Washington’s iconic monuments illuminated at night.

Along the way, students consider a simple but powerful question: How can one person make a difference?

Day 3 | Service & Community: Leadership Through Action

Spend the morning with DC Central Kitchen, learning how this innovative nonprofit addresses food insecurity while creating opportunities through culinary job training.

Students participate in hands-on service, working alongside the organization to prepare meals for the community before reflecting on how teamwork, empathy, and service can create meaningful change.

Continue to Planet Word, an interactive museum exploring language, communication, and the power of words.

Day 4 | Inspiration & Purpose: What Kind of Leader Will You Be?

Put observation, critical thinking, teamwork, and problem-solving to the test through an immersive experience at the International Spy Museum.

Then visit the National Portrait Gallery, where students discover the stories of leaders, innovators, artists, scientists, and changemakers who have shaped American history and culture.

Wrap up the day with a Future Self activity, asking students to identify qualities they admire in others and one way they want to grow when they return home. Celebrate the week together with a farewell dinner and group activity.

Day 5 | Take it home: From Washington DC Back To Your Community‍ ‍

Gather for a final reflection on the week and identify one lesson, goal, or action students want to bring back to their school or community.

Then transfer to the airport for the journey home, taking with you new friendships, greater confidence, and a deeper understanding of how leadership and service can make an impact anywhere.

Depending on flight schedules, groups may add a final visit to the Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum’s Udvar-Hazy Center.
