This itinerary uses Sicily as a lens for exploring the connections among history, migration, culture, food, geography, and contemporary life.
Your school can customize the experience around classical studies, history, global studies, migration, food and agriculture, Italian language, environmental science, or other academic themes.

Day 1 | Welcome to Sicily: First Impressions of Island Life
Arrive in Sicily and travel to Syracuse, your home base for exploring southeastern Sicily. Settle into the rhythm of island life before heading into Ortigia, Syracuse’s historic center, for a welcome dinner and your first experience of Sicily’s architecture, hospitality, and local identity.

Day 2 | Crossroads of the Mediterranean: Layers of Sicilian Identity
Explore Syracuse and Ortigia with a local guide, discovering how different civilizations have left their mark on the city.
Encounter Greek, Roman, and Baroque influences while considering how history becomes part of contemporary identity rather than simply something preserved in museums. Students then have time to explore Ortigia and observe how its historic spaces continue to function as part of everyday Sicilian life.

Day 3 | Ancient Landscapes & Agriculture: How the Land Shapes Culture
Venture into the countryside to explore Pantalica, a UNESCO World Heritage Site known for its limestone canyons and prehistoric rock-cut tombs.
Then visit a traditional olive oil farm to learn how Sicily’s landscape and climate have influenced agriculture, food, and livelihoods for generations. Together, the experiences connect thousands of years of human history with the land that continues to sustain Sicilian communities today.

Day 4 | Food, Migration & Mediterranean Identity: History You Can Taste
Explore how Sicily’s food tells the story of centuries of movement across the Mediterranean. Visit the Temple of Apollo, then discuss migration and Sicilian identity before exploring regional ingredients through a hands-on cooking experience.
Students consider how migration and cultural exchange become embedded in everyday traditions, and how food can reveal a history that crosses borders and generations.

Day 5 | Where Classical History Still Lives: Ancient Greece, Religion & Modern Sicily
Step into ancient Syracuse at the Archaeological Park of Neapolis and Greek Theatre, exploring the legacy of a city that was once among the most powerful in the Greek world.
Then examine another layer of Sicilian identity through traditions connected to Saint Lucia, considering how classical history, religion, and contemporary culture continue to coexist.
Finish with a sunset boat experience along the Syracuse coast.

Day 6 | Life on a Volcano: Mount Etna & Human Adaptation
Travel to Mount Etna and explore one of Europe’s most active volcanoes with a local expert. Hike across volcanic terrain while learning about Etna’s geology, changing ecosystems, and influence on agriculture and nearby communities.
Students consider what it means to build a life alongside a powerful and unpredictable natural environment before sharing a traditional meal at a countryside agriturismo.

Day 7 | Noto & the Ionian Coast: Baroque Sicily & Coastal Life
Travel to Noto and explore its distinctive Sicilian Baroque architecture before spending the afternoon along the Ionian coast.
The slower pace offers an opportunity to experience another dimension of Sicilian life while reflecting on how architecture, landscape, food, and community contribute to a sense of place. Return to Ortigia for a farewell dinner.

Day 8 | Arrivederci, Sicilia: Taking the Experience Home
Gather for a final reflection on the different Sicilies students encountered throughout the journey: ancient and modern, local and global, agricultural and urban, traditional and continually changing.
Depart with a deeper understanding of how geography, history, migration, and cultural exchange shape the identity of a place and its people.

Days 9-10 | Extend Your Experience: Go Deeper into Sicily
For longer programs, add experiences that deepen a particular academic or cultural focus. Options might include additional archaeological sites, Italian language and cultural exchange, expanded exploration of migration and Mediterranean identity, additional food and agriculture experiences, or more time exploring Sicily’s coastal communities.
