Journey from the energy of Tokyo to the temples and traditions of Kyoto, experiencing Japan through both its historic and contemporary cultures. Students ride the bullet train, explore iconic neighborhoods, experience sumo, try taiko drumming, attend a traditional tea ceremony, discover anime and gaming culture, and connect with communities in both urban and rural Japan.

This itinerary introduces students to Japan through a balance of iconic destinations, hands-on cultural experiences, outdoor exploration, and opportunities to experience everyday life.

Day 1 | Welcome to Japan: First impressions of Tokyo
Arrive in Tokyo, meet your EdOdyssey Program Leader, and begin getting to know one of the world’s most dynamic cities.
Settle into your accommodations before gathering for a welcome dinner and introduction to Japanese culture, customs, and the adventure ahead.

Day 2 | Old Tokyo & Modern Culture: Temples, Traditions & Anime
Begin with a cultural orientation to Japanese customs, etiquette, and how to travel respectfully and confidently.
Explore historic Asakusa and Senso-ji Temple, then experience a completely different side of Tokyo in Akihabara, known for anime, manga, gaming, and technology.

Day 3 | Tokyo: Art, Energy & Sumo: Experiencing Modern Japan
See Tokyo from above before stepping inside the immersive world of teamLab Borderless, where art, technology, light, and movement come together.
Then experience one of Japan’s most iconic traditions: sumo wrestling. Depending on program dates and availability, students may attend a professional sumo tournament or experience a sumo demonstration while learning about the sport’s history, rituals, and discipline.
Finish the day in Shibuya and Harajuku, two neighborhoods at the center of contemporary Tokyo culture.

Day 4 | Tokyo to Kyoto: Travel Back Through Time
Board Japan’s famous Shinkansen bullet train for Kyoto, enjoying a bento lunch along the way.
Explore Kyoto’s historic streets, including Gion and Kiyomizu-dera, before slowing down for a traditional tea ceremony that introduces students to Japanese hospitality, mindfulness, and ritual.

Day 5 | Rural Japan & Service: Community Beyond the Cities
Leave central Kyoto for the rural landscapes of Keihoku and experience a different side of Japan.
Participate in a hands-on service-learning experience connected to the local community and surrounding satoyama landscape, giving students an opportunity to learn, contribute, and better understand rural life in Japan.

Day 6 | Osaka: Food, Neighborhoods & Everyday Life
Take the train to Osaka and explore one of Japan’s most energetic and food-loving cities.
Students experience Osaka in small groups with their chaperones and Program Leaders, using public transportation to explore neighborhoods, markets, shrines, and local food.

Day 7 | Arashiyama: Nature, Temples & Exploration
Explore Kyoto’s beautiful Arashiyama district, walking through its famous bamboo grove and hiking to Iwatayama Monkey Park for views across the city.
Continue through the neighborhood’s shrines, bridges, and local streets, experiencing another side of Kyoto beyond its most famous temples.

Day 8 | Rhythm, Food & Pop Culture: Japan Old & New
Learn to play together during an energetic taiko drumming workshop, then explore the foods and flavors of Kyoto’s famous Nishiki Market.
Spend the afternoon discovering modern Japanese pop culture through manga, Pokémon, Nintendo, and gaming before celebrating the journey with a Japanese-style karaoke farewell.

Day 9 | Fushimi Inari & Departure: Taking Japan Home
Begin the final day walking beneath the famous red torii gates of Fushimi Inari Shrine.
Reflect on the journey, the people and traditions students encountered, and what they learned about themselves as travelers before departing Japan.
