Sardinia, Italy: Blue Zones, Health & Longevity
Sardinia | 9-Day Faculty-Led Program
Explore Health & Longevity in One of the World’s Original Blue Zones
Designed for students in public health, health sciences, nutrition, psychology, sociology, gerontology, and related fields, this immersive program explores Sardinia’s reputation as one of the world’s original Blue Zones, places recognized for unusually high rates of longevity and healthy aging.
Students experience health outside the traditional clinical setting, examining the lifestyle and community factors associated with wellbeing across the lifespan. Through conversations with local experts and residents, food and agricultural experiences, community engagement, and observation of everyday life, students investigate the potential roles of nutrition, natural movement, family, social connection, purpose, environment, and cultural traditions in supporting longer, healthier lives.

9-Day Itinerary
A Program, Built to Be Customized
This itinerary is designed to show what a Sardinia Blue Zones, Health & Longevity program could look like. Specific community engagements, expert conversations, food experiences, and site visits will vary based on your program dates, group size, academic goals, and local availability.
We'll work with your faculty and study abroad team to adapt the program to your course objectives and students. Activities can place greater emphasis on public health, nutrition, healthy aging, psychology, community health, food systems, or another course-aligned theme.
Day 1 | Arrival & Introduction to Sardinia
Arrive in Sardinia and meet your EdOdyssey Program Leader for an introduction to the island, its communities, and the program's central question: what can one of the world's original Blue Zones teach us about living longer, healthier lives? Gather for a welcome dinner featuring traditional Sardinian foods and an introduction to the connections among food, culture, community, and health.
Sample Experiences:
Arrival orientation • Introduction to Sardinia • Blue Zones program framing • Welcome dinner
Day 2 | Understanding Blue Zones & Longevity
Meet with a researcher, healthcare professional, educator, or local expert to explore Sardinia's history as a center for longevity research. Examine the interaction between genetics and lifestyle factors such as diet, movement, social relationships, environment, and daily routines.
Students also critically examine the Blue Zones framework, considering what research can tell us about healthy aging and where simple explanations of longevity may fall short.
Sample Experiences:
Longevity expert engagement • Blue Zones research • Healthy aging • Public health • Guided discussion
Day 3 | Food, Nutrition & The Mediterranean Lifestyle
Explore Sardinian food traditions through local markets, farms, producers, or a hands-on culinary experience. Examine traditional ingredients, agricultural practices, eating patterns, and the role of shared meals in daily life.
Students consider how nutrition intersects with seasonality, local food production, family traditions, culture, and community rather than viewing diet as an isolated health behavior.
Sample Experiences:
Local food producer • Traditional Sardinian foods • Nutrition • Cooking experience • Shared meal
Day 4 | Movement, Landscape & Everyday Health
Experience Sardinia's landscape on foot and consider how physical activity can be built naturally into everyday life. Explore how walking, farming, shepherding, terrain, and daily routines differ from more sedentary lifestyles.
Students consider how the built and natural environments influence movement and what Sardinia can teach us about designing communities that support healthier behavior.
Sample Experiences:
Guided walk • Natural movement • Rural landscapes • Physical activity • Environmental health
Day 5 | Family, Community & Social Connection
Spend time in a Sardinian community and examine the social dimensions of longevity. Through conversations and observation, students explore family structures, intergenerational relationships, friendship, community participation, and the ways social networks can provide support throughout life.
Consider social connection as a determinant of health and compare Sardinian community life with patterns of aging and social isolation in other societies.
Sample Experiences:
Community engagement • Intergenerational connection • Social determinants of health • Local perspectives • Cultural exchange
Day 6 | Independent Exploration & Reflection
Students have time to independently experience the community and observe the rhythms of everyday Sardinian life.
Faculty can use the day for individual assignments, journaling, small-group exploration, or informal observation connecting course concepts with students' experiences. Students are encouraged to consider which elements associated with Blue Zones they see reflected in daily life and which are more complex than the framework might suggest.
Sample Experiences:
Independent exploration • Student reflection • Cultural observation • Journaling • Free time
Day 7 | Purpose, Tradition & Wellbeing
Explore the relationship between meaningful roles, work, cultural traditions, and wellbeing. Engage with local residents, artisans, farmers, or community members to consider how purpose, identity, daily routines, and connection to place may contribute to health throughout the lifespan.
Students examine the idea of purpose as a component of healthy aging while considering how cultural and economic contexts shape what meaningful participation looks like.
Sample Experiences:
Local community engagement • Purpose & wellbeing • Cultural traditions • Rural livelihoods • Guided reflection
Day 8 | What Can the Blue Zones Teach Us?
Bring together observations from across the program to critically examine the Blue Zones model and the broader lessons Sardinia may offer for public health and healthy aging.
Students consider which elements of Sardinian life might translate to other communities and which depend on the island's unique history, culture, environment, and social structures. Conclude with student reflection and a farewell dinner.
Sample Experiences:
Blue Zones analysis • Comparative public health • Healthy aging • Student presentations • Program reflection • Farewell dinner
Day 9 | Departure
Depart Sardinia with a broader understanding of longevity and of health as something shaped not only by healthcare, but also by food, movement, relationships, environment, culture, purpose, and the routines of everyday life.
